THE CHILDREN WE SERVE
The orphanage Hands on Haiti helps support is a home exclusively for boys located in the small town of Gressier, approximately twenty miles from Port-au-Prince, Haiti. On the average, twenty boys reside in a dormitory-style building situated within a walled complex that also houses a church and Christian school. At the orphanage, young boys find acceptance, stability and healing in the love of Jesus. All of the boys who reside at the orphanage came out of difficult living situations. Some have been orphaned, while others where abandoned to fend for themselves on the streets. Others were brought to the orphanage by parents too poor to care for them. Most of them had never attended school until they came to live at the orphanage. The boys range in age from seven to fourteen and are small for their age due to suffering from malnutrition in their younger years.
They receive a good education, which is key to a productive future. They also receive Christian training through regular church attendance, Bible study, music and prayer. Each boy is introduced to the gospel of Jesus Christ and has the opportunity to accept Him as his personal Lord and Savior.
The Christian school also provides an education for approximately 125 primary and secondary boys and girls who live in the small town of Gressier. Many families cannot afford to pay their full tuition. Hands on Haiti helps supplement the cost of running the school and provides school supplies.
As our funds increase, Hands on Haiti plans to reach out to the children in the l’Estere Church community. These children are the poorest of the poor, with no outside organizations helping meet their needs. The children of l’Estere do not attend school, as none are available in their area. Once the l’Estere Church is repaired Church of God Philadelphia Haiti would like to start a Christian school in the church building. One of our hands-on projects would be to deliver food, clothing and school supplies to these children on a continuing basis.
Haiti has the poorest economy of any country in the Western Hemisphere where most Haitians live a day-to-day existence with little hope for the future. The orphanage and school offers a place of Hope, a “safe haven” in a country that has experienced abject poverty and political turmoil for many years. |
